Peavy update, Cubs Sale, Other Notes

Here is some quick news on the Cubs:

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Suntimes said that the Cubs will go into spring training looking for a veteran starting pitching or Jake Peavy and a leadoff hitter, like Chone Figgins or Brian Roberts. (I think if the Cubs get Peavy they will have to settle for Figgins and I think if they really want both they will be able to get both.)

Also Gordon Wittenyer of the Chicago Suntimes said the deal for the Cubs is nearly complete. This is awesome news, and this is where you'll find rumors on the Cubs.

I will keep you posted.

  1. Trade for Peavy. Forget Figgins and roberts. Just get a guy like Nomar to back up third and be your main Right handed Pinch Hitter. Im sure Nomar could also Give D-Lee or anyone in the infield a day off here and there if needed. There is no room for figgins unless you move Fontenot to the bench. Plus the angles are going to ask for too much. Just get Peavy and save the other pieces till the trade deadline. Lets see what we have.

  2. Why trade for Roberts when he is a FA next year? I was Peavy! I agree with Steve. Balt will want everybody for Robers, and I dont think we need it!

  3. This would be my 25 man roster:
    Peavy
    Zambrano
    Harden
    Dempster
    Lilly

    Marmol
    Gregg
    Heilman
    Marshall
    Cotts
    Gaudin
Shark (Vizcaino if shark is being groomed as a starter)

    Lee
    Fontenot
    Ramirez
    Theriot
    Bradley
    Fukudome
    Soriano
    Soto
    Johnson
    Bako
    Gathright
    Miles
    Garciaparra

I think the Peavy trade will consist of giving up Vitters, Hart, Guzman, Stevens, and possibly one other.

This may deplete the Cubs pen but they still have Ascanio and maybe a few guys ready to come up in a relief role if needed

  5. Steve, I can see a mid Spring Training trade coming! I cannot wait for this ownership thing to be over with!! I just wish we could keep Vitters, but then Marshall is gone for sure! I guess the key question is this: keep Vitters or Marshall?
    Anonymous, haha I think so!

  6. I think the cubs would have not choice but to include Vitters in a Peavy trade. They may be interested in Marshall as well but Lou is a match ups type of manager. I think if they go with only one lefty in the pen it would really limit Lou's managing ability. I dont think he would be able to do all the things he would want to do especailly since alot of left handed hitters have trouble hitting left handed pitchers. For example Felix Pie. If the cubs were to include marshall i think they would need to go out and get a left handed reliever and i just dont see that happening. Although Joe Beimel would be nice. Regardless i still think Vitters would be included no matter what. But what do i know. i could be wrong. Its just speculation.

  7. Do you think Peavy is worth it?

  8. Yes, Only because you would have him for 4 years and hes one of the best pitchers in baseball and hes still kinda young. The cubs are trying to win now. Im not saying Vitters wont be a good MLB ball player but how good? he is just a prospect. Weren't Edwin Encarnacion and Kevin Kouzmanoff supposed to be great players. I mean there good but not as good as they were supposed to be. I think if you have a chance to get Peavy and have the best rotation in Baseball then id definately do it. Its a tough arguement to make when you are putting the future in danger but i dont think any of us will care if we can get a world series championship.

Do they need Peavy? Probably not. but you can Never have enough Pitching and Pitching wins in the playoffs.I dont think the team is as good as they were at the end of last season. Adding another Ace like Peavy could be exactly what they need. The cubs are close. They just may need one final piece to push them over the top

  9. I agree alot with what you have said, EXCPET I am not sold on the pitching wins playoff games. I mean it helps, but look at our hitting in the playoffs, our pitching was okay aganist LA. Harden threw a good game, but when the offense is scoring up to 2 runs, usually only one game, there is alot of pressure on the pitching. Cubs get Peavy, with the money the Cubs have, we can get a 3B via free agency.
